- When a waiter doesn’t write your order down at a restaurant. Bonus negative points if the meal does not come out correctly (even though it’s still aggravating even if the meal is right).
- Why the problem exists: People think they are smarter than they actually are and don’t want to “waste time” even though not writing down the order and it coming out wrong will create more wasted time in the end.
- When you cannot get a waiter’s attention when the restaurant is busy.
- Why the problem exists: A waiter cannot be everywhere at once and some tables may be more demanding than others so the quieter tables (even though they may be just as needy) will get overlooked.
- When other people don’t drive with their lights on or know that their brake lights are out.
- Why the problem exists: People don’t pay attention to details and are in too much of a hurry to take their time to go through a process (even if it wastes time).
- When a customer service representative doesn’t listen and talks over me when calling in.
- Why the problem exists: The employee may think they’ve heard the question before, and answer incorrectly, giving the customer wrong information and therefore wasting time in the end.
- When you call customer service and hear background noise that is louder than the person you’re speaking to.
- Why the problem exists: The company is too cheap to buy noise cancelling headphones for their employees which delivers a low level of service.
- When you don’t have cash to tip a valet or service worker for their service.
- Why the problem exists: Not everyone carries cash on them at all times and are unable to give tips despite receiving good service.
- When places don’t have WiFi.
- Why the problem exists: Places may be “old school” and not current on technology and it may be seen as an unnecessary expense even though it is becoming more and more normal.
- When you have to take time to do laundry but it’s too expensive and time consuming to go to a laundromat.
- Why the problem exists: Clean clothes are a necessity, but there is routine maintenance that needs to be done for them even though it is constant.
- When you can’t remember if you locked the front door/closed the garage.
- Why the problem exists: We have numerous things to remember to do before leaving the house and sometimes you may be distracted when it comes to doing mundane things that you usually auto-pilot through.
- When people drive in the left lane and are not passing anyone (regardless of how fast they are going).
- Why the problem exists: People don’t understand road laws and should probably be re-educated/tested on a regular basis.
- When people don’t treat sidewalks/store aisles like roads – stay to the right unless you are passing.
- Why the problem exists: People are inconsiderate of others and only concerned about themselves so they don’t pay attention to others around them.
- When someone writes a check in the check-out line.
- Why the problem exists: Because checks are in existence and still accepted as a form of payment for some reason.
- When people are too busy talking on their phone in the check-out line.
- Why the problem exists: People are not concerned with the fact that they are wasting other people’s time.
- When your neighbors’ dogs bark for no reason at random times throughout the day.
- Why the problem exists: Some people should not own animals they cannot control or have time to devote to proper training.
- When people don’t manage their children out in public, and then criticize you if you say something because “you don’t have kids”
- Why the problem exists: People seem to earn some sort of entitlement when they have children and think that other people “just don’t understand”.
- When people take advantage of good customer service.
- Why the problem exists: People only look out for themselves and don’t realize that by taking advantage of a “free meal” only makes things more expensive for everyone else who actually follow the rules of society.
- When businesses are not transparent with fees and other charges.
- Why the problem exists: Relationship building takes too long for some businesses and they would rather entice with a bait and switch, then load fees onto the customer to make their money.
- When businesses have websites that are incorrect (items out of stock, wrong store hours, wrong services, etc.)
- Why the problem exists: Businesses are too consumed in other tasks (or broke) to pay someone to keep a website constantly updated.
- When businesses try to market to you with boiler plate offers but you already know their secrets.
- Why the problem exists: Businesses would rather make a quick buck than build long lasting relationships with their customers. Fortunately, this old-school style of high-pressure sales is going away to an extent.
- When the cable company only sells you an entire cable package instead of the one or two individual channels that you will actually watch.
- Why the problem exists: Bureaucratic red tape and the geographical monopolies that certain cable providers have.
- When people do not microchip their animals.
- Why the problem exists: People are irresponsible and make emotional decisions (i.e. buying a pet), but then do not like to take the responsibilities of maintaining that pet as if it were their own child.
- When people give an online recipe a poor rating and then go on to comment about all of the things they substituted.
- Why the problem exists: People do not like taking personal responsibility and would rather be vocal about how someone else did something wrong, even though they would discover who is really wrong if they took a look in the mirror.
Reflection:
This
assignment basically instructed us to be negative and see all of the negativity
around us, and despite popular thinking, this can actually be a good thing as
it allows us to identify gaps where things are not “perfect”. Maybe I am just a
negative person in general, so this assignment was not too difficult for me
with pointing out all of the things that “bug” me. The explanation pat of the
assignment, however, proved to be slightly more difficult, although most of my
problems are a result of people not conforming to my view of the world. In
attempt to put a positive spin on the explanations, maybe I should just fall in
line and not be bothered by all of the little things, but that means I might
stop looking for opportunities to improve things too.

Hello Shane,
ReplyDeleteI found your bug list to be rather different than other students and my self, but also quite interesting! We had a few things in common; such as, the people not treating sidewalks and store isles like roads. After reading your bug list I notice some things that you mentioned that truly bother me that I had not thought of; the most prominent one being when people do not microchip their animals. It was nice to have a different perspective to look at.
I also agree with you on the aspect of negative thinking. My first comment on a peer review was basically explaining how sometimes considering these negative elements around us, we can turn those negatives into positive opportunities. For example, on the last student's bug list I read he mentioned that he was not happy with the durability of his drum set. I suggested that this could be a possible entrepreneurship opportunity if he really wanted it to be, just an idea obviously! So I most definitely agree with you about the positive effects of occasionally thinking about the negatives! Great job on this assignment!
Good Luck in the class!

Your first comment is the definition of how great this post was. Waiters always mess up my order when they don't write it down and i never thought of it. But at the same time when i kept reading i noticed some odd qualities like micro chips in pets. Some people believe that nothing should be programmed inside of life and that is their choice. I guess we both realized most things that bothered us though came from other people not doing something we like. I guess its just human nature.
